Carotid Artery plus CIMT

As we age, the risk of heart attack or stroke increases. That's why it's important to take preventive measures, such as getting the CIMT test and Carotid ultrasound

Arterial Age Screening

What is the CIMT test?

The CIMT test measures the thickness of the walls of your carotid arteries, which are located in your neck. It can detect early signs of atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque in your arteries.

What is a Carotid Artery Ultrasound?

Where we evaluate 3 arterial segments for a complete Plaque and Blood flow evaluation.

By combining the carotid ultrasound and CIMT measurement, we can get a more complete picture of your risk of heart attack or stroke.

What is a Carotid Ultrasound plus CIMT?

A CIMT Test (also known as Carotid Intima-Media Thickness scan) is used to assess the thickness of the inner layers of the carotid arteries. This non-invasive medical test uses sound waves to diagnose and monitor the carotid artery walls in the neck to identify potential risks of atherosclerosis.

In this procedure, a sonographer places a transducer (a piece of ultrasound equipment that looks like a microphone) on a patient's neck, enabling a real-time visualization of the thickness of the intima and media layers of the carotid arteries and check for the potential presence of atherosclerotic plaques.

Here at the Atlanta Ultrasound Clinic, we have the most up-to-date ultrasound equipment to provide unparalleled accuracy and offer the highest quality service and medical imaging interpretation for our patients.

When you get a CIMT imaging scan with us, a certified and licensed sonographer will record images of your carotid arteries, which are then analyzed by a board-certified radiologist after the scan finishes.

During this analysis, our board-certified radiologist will write a detailed report explaining the measured thickness of the intima and media layers within your carotid arteries – indicating any potential risks or the presence of atherosclerosis.

If there are any abnormalities or conditions identified during the scan, these will be included in the report also.

What Conditions Can a CIMT Test Help Diagnose or Monitor?

The CIMT test is helpful for assessing one's risk of stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular diseases by detecting the presence of atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid arteries located in the neck region. An estimated arterial age is provided in the radiology report, as well as an estimated risk factor for a negative cardiovascular event.

The Process

How it Works

Ultrasounds are safe and painless. They can look for many different health indicators, and there are a variety of scan types available to help you get the diagnosis you need.

Schedule

Every call is answered by a Registered Sonographer, which means we have the answers to all of your questions and concerns

Scan

A Carotid Ultrasound plus CMT typically takes between 20-30 minutes. More complex scans can last up to 60 minutes

Report

Our board-certified Radiologist will prepare your report in as little as one day. We will send you and your physician a copy of your results

Carotid CIMT FAQ
What is the difference between a Carotid and CIMT test?
A CIMT (Carotid Intima-Media Thickness) measures the thickness of the inner layers of the carotid artery to detect early plaque buildup and estimate your arterial age. This is great for those who do not have plaque yet. The Carotid ultrasound takes it a step further and does a deep survey for existing plaque, and evaluates it to determine if it is soft or hard plaque, which is a key difference in how your doctor may address the issue.
Who should get a CIMT scan?
CIMT is ideal for adults with a family history of stroke or heart disease, those interested in longevity and prevention, and patients who want more advanced screening than standard cholesterol tests.
How much does a CIMT scan cost?
Our Carotid plus CIMT scan is $249 and includes images, a detailed radiologist report, and results delivered electronically within 1–3 business days.
Do I need a referral or insurance?
No referral or insurance is required. We are a self-pay clinic focused on providing affordable, accessible care.
Will my doctor accept these results?
Yes. The CIMT report is reviewed by a board-certified radiologist and is accepted by doctors across the U.S., including functional medicine providers.
How is CIMT different from a regular carotid ultrasound?
A regular carotid ultrasound looks for existing blockages. CIMT measures early wall thickening before blockages occur and estimates arterial age, which is better for prevention.
Is this the one Dr. Ford Brewer talks about?
Yes, this is the same CIMT test discussed by Dr. Ford Brewer. In fact, we go even further—our CIMT includes images and exact measurements, which most screening companies do not provide. This is not just a basic CIMT test; it's a deeper, investigative scan designed for people who want real insight, not just a quick sweep.
My doctor has never heard of this test. How can I understand it after?
Our CIMT test comes with a detailed visual report that clearly explains your arterial health, including measurements and images. If your doctor is unfamiliar with CIMT, we provide information to help explain the results. We can also assist with follow-up recommendations based on your findings so you know exactly what your next step should be.
How does this differ from other screening companies?
Unlike many basic screening providers, we offer a full diagnostic experience. Most screening companies do not provide access to images—even upon your doctor's request—and don’t include details about plaque characteristics, such as whether it is soft or calcified (which is important to know). Our goal is to provide not just a scan, but a complete, meaningful picture of your arterial health.
